Italian activists: More actions needed to support hunger strikers

After visiting the hunger strikers in the city of Strasbourg, Italian and Kurds activists called for mobilization across the world to avoid any further death in the resistance against the isolation imposed on Öcalan.

The hunger strike demanding the end of isolation of Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan in Strasbourg, continues with determination. The activists on hunger strike have been visited by many Kurds and friends from many European countries, especially Italy, Germany and Austria.

A group of 32 people, including 7 Italians from various solidarity committees with the Kurdish people, visited the hunger strikers in Strasbourg. Among the Italian groups were Sandro Targetti, Gian Luigi Deiana, Paolo Zammori, Alessandro Bellucci and Alfonso Agugliaro.

Targetti: Isolation is the torture of the modern prisons

Sandro Targetti, member of the Toscana Kurdistan Solidarity Coordination Group, told ANF that the isolation of the leader of a people could never be accepted, and urged European states to end their support to the regime of Erdogan.

Targetti said: “Isolation in prisons is unacceptable. This is a form of torture. The isolation of president Öcalan is unacceptable, because he represents the struggle of the Kurdish people. It is very urgent to mobilize both in Europe and elsewhere in the world, to end isolation. Indeed, isolation is a torture against prisoners in modern world prisons.”

Protest against isolation in Italy

Targetti added that in Italy “we promote a big march and rally on 31 March to commemorate the struggle of President Öcalan as well as martyr Lorenzo Orsetti (Tekoşer) who fought alongside the Kurds in Rojava and Northern Syria.”

According to the Italian activist “we have to stop the support given to Erdogan. We have to stop selling weapons to the Erdogan regime. He has a lot of instruments in his hands, and they are not just coming from Europe. Italy also has its share in this.”

Europe needs the Kurdish struggle

Gian Luigi Deiana, a member of the Rete Sardegna Kurdistan, underlined that Europe needs the struggle of the Kurdish people.

He added: “Our first priority is ending isolation. For this, I call on all responsible European institutions: I urge them to do all in their hands to end this isolation. All we want from the Europeans is not just to show solidarity with the suffering of the Kurds. Because European civilization needs Kurdish history and their ongoing struggle. This is not only a struggle for the Kurds, but also a struggle for humanity.”

Orkan: Erol Aydemir on solidarity hunger strike in Rome

Yılmaz Orkan, spokesperson of the Kurdistan Information Bureau in Rome, said that they are trying to increase support for the hunger striker resistance against isolation in Italy.

Orkan also underlined that Erol Aydemir has gone on hunger strike in Rome in order to support the hunger strike that has been going on for 111 days in Strasbourg.

Organ added that Kurdish and Italian activists after their visit to Strasbourg are planning new actions to step up the struggle in support of the hunger strikers and to prevent further deaths.
