Hunger strikers in Strasbourg speak up – Mustafa Sarıkaya

At this critical phase of the hunger strike action, ANF shares the messages sent to the public opinion by some of the hunger strikers in Strasbourg. We begin with politician Mustafa Sarikaya’s remarks.

The 14 Kurdish activists on hunger strike in Strasbourg to demand the end of the isolation of Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan, have entered their 68th day of fast.

The activists underlined the importance of the support of the people to achieve the end of isolation and force the institutions that could help this goal to be reached, like the Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT), to take action.

The hunger strikers are in Kurdistan, Turkey and Europe ask everyone to do whatever in their hands to ensure the voice of the resistance is amplified.

The activists said that they have not put any health issue in the agenda in the 2 months of their fast. They are worried for the prisoners on hunger strike under torture conditions, for Leyla Güven who has been fasting for 107 and for Nasır Yağız who has been fasting for 94 days. They worry that anytime the news of someone fallen a martyr in this resistance may come.

Politician Mustafa Sarikaya

“We, the hunger strikers in Strasbourg, are particularly worried about the conditions of Leyla, Nasir and friends in prisons. So far, this action has proved to be very simple, an action that responds to the needs of the moment and the period and perhaps even to the historical process. As a people, as the People's Liberation Movement, as Kurds from one of the four parts or Kurds living abroad, we are enjoying this return to our own agenda. This action has created such peace.

Life must be free, principled, with identity, dignity, and, of course, with our leader. This is what we call life. All of our friends are acting with the consciousness that life would be free only when our Leader is free. It is from this point of view that this action has got on the agenda.

But we don't have the luxury of being limited to the agenda; we have an urgent duty to achieve the initial goal of our action, we have an urgent responsibility. This responsibility can, of course, continue on its way with the lifting of isolation. We are not only activists who want to end isolation: our main goal is freedom and freedom passes through the freedom of Leader Apo. In this sense, the slogan of our action is very precise: “Break isolation, destroy fascism, and liberate Kurdistan.” This slogan expresses the sense of our action.

Everyone has to unite around this action that has reached this critical stage. It's not just about complaining or grieving. No doubt we're sad. I think we're the saddest activists. What are we sad for? From the beginning we have expressed this at different stages of the action: to live without the Leader is the greatest of our sorrows. Living without freedom means slavery; this is beyond the sadness, it is actually a curse. It is a disgrace that can never be accepted and it is not enough to make some agendas and get angry. We believe that this action, led by Comrade Leyla, should show the success of breaking the isolation of Önder Öcalan before it can spread over time. This action is for that too. This is not a very successful goal. The last days have shown that this is the case.

This action revealed a certain level. But it needs to be completed. With this completion, we saw that we can destroy the walls of isolation in Imrali. In this respect, there is a need for a process which is very serious, much more radical. There is a need for everyone to carry this action everywhere. When this will happen, then we will see the end of isolation in Imrali.

We are at this stage. Once this wall is destroyed, no one can rebuild it. Once fascism collapses, it would be forever.

Fascism cannot survive without the wall of isolation. Once that wall is destroyed, fascism will be buried under its debris. This is a new process for our people. We will create the moment of further expansion of existing achievements.

The fire lit by Leyla must be spread everywhere. Okay, our enemy is experiencing difficulties, but let’s be clear: we have not yet opened the breach that would destroy it.

We, the hunger strikers in Strasbourg, are here to stay: we will continue our action, no matter the price.

These actions once again saw that millions of people met together with the same spirit, with the same demand. And this soul is the soul of success.

We also say that it is time to double the action. On this basis, our people, of course, live this moment, and action is everywhere.

We can turn this spring into the spring of Kurdistan, the spring of Leader Öcalan.

This is our call: let’s make the spring of 2019 coloured with Kurdistan colours, with Leader Öcalan’s colour.

This is the will of all our martyrs. Their last word was: Biji Serok Apo [Long Live Leader Öcalan].

Therefore, the freedom of Leader Öcalan and the freedom of Kurdistan is what they demand from us.

We call upon everyone to fulfil the demand of our martyrs and to assume freeing Leader Apo as their duty.

Success is ours, victory is ours.

There's no doubt about that. We will succeed and with Free Leader, we will have a spring in Kurdistan. We wish everyone success.”
