Hunger strikers in Berlin: We will succeed

Every day, people come to Berlin to provide moral support for four Kurdish activists on indefinite hunger strike demanding the end of the isolation imposed on Abdullah Öcalan.

Kurdish activists Ömer Bağdur, Cemal Kobanê, Şiyar Xelil and Mele Mustafa Tuzak joined at various times in the hunger strike protest initiated by HDP deputy Leyla Güven on 7 November against the isolation of PKK founder Abdullah Öcalan.

Last week, they decided to relocate the scene of their action from their homes in Kassel, Nuremberg and Duisburg to Berlin in order to reach a larger public. The activists first held their hunger strike in a caravan on the road between the German Federal Parliament and the Prime Ministry buildings. Due to health problems of the activists, the action had to be relocated to the Kurdish Community Center two days ago.

From the beginning, the hunger strike met with interest in the Kurdish, revolutionary and democratic circles in Berlin. People from all over Germany also come to visit the activists. In recent days, people from cities such as Dortmund, Bochum, Essen, Mecklenburg, Dresden and Leipzig came to Berlin to support the hunger strikers. Some of them spoke to the ANF.

One of the visitors is Kurdish journalist Hevi Gabar who said the following; "The resistance of friends has attracted much attention, we feel responsible towards them. We fully support their demands. We declare to the forces that took part in the international conspiracy against Öcalan, and to all counter-revolutionaries; we will never accept the isolation and torture our Leader is subject to. We did and will never bow to your extermination policies against our leader and our liberal values. Our common demand in solidarity with these comrades is the lifting of isolation, the destruction of fascism and the recognition of a free status for Kurdistan. If we continue to strengthen our participation in the actions of thousands, success will come closer."

Ibrahim Özsular from Mecklenburg explains: "I greet all friends in the resistance with respect. I came to Berlin from Mecklenburg. I appeal to all Kurdish people in Europe, it is just inhumane if we sit at home and do nothing, while people sacrifice their lives for an independent Kurdistan and their bodies melt away every day, every moment. We must not leave the people in this resistance alone, we must visit them and always stand by their side. I urge everyone to be sensitive.”

Fırat Tuzak from Bochum explains: "We greet the action of our friends and bow before them with the utmost respect. We declare that we stand by the side of these friends who use their bodies against the isolation of Chairman Apo. I call on all Kurds who love their country to fight even more, before more of our friends die. It's about time. We will continue to fight with the slogan ‘resistance is life’.”

Hunger striker Cemal Kobanê received the visitors with the words: "We are very happy about your coming. We do not want our people to doubt our ultimate resolve and our belief in success. But we have to make one thing clear, we draw our strength from our people and chairman Apo. We feel very well here in Berlin. We were warmly received and people are showing great interest. If we turn that energy into results-oriented action, we will certainly succeed.”

Hunger striker Şiyar Xelil said that they have come to Berlin to strengthen the resistance: "This resistance has also re-shaped and strengthened our inner life. We take responsibility for each other. We know very well that our people have been in action everywhere since the beginning of the resistance. But it's also obvious that this not enough. We have decided to come here to make the resistance a little more effective and to draw the attention of the world public to the action. It is necessary that our people also provides stronger support in this sense.”
