Hunger strikers for Afrin in Geneva: UN remains accomplice

The hunger strike for Afrin launched on 19 March in front of the United Nations (UN) headquarters has left 10 days behind.

The hunger strike in front of the UN headquarters in Geneva has been going on for ten days. The activists are calling for immediate action by the international community to stop the Turkish military invasion of northern Syria, end the invasion of Afrin, and supply hundreds of thousands of refugees from Afrin. They stress that the UN is guilty of complicity through its silence.

The hunger strikers state that the United Nations insists on its silence in the face of the illegal invasion of Afrin by the Turkish state. In order to break the inaction of the UN, international solidarity must be increased, they say.

Furthermore, every day hundreds of people visit the tent of hunger strikers. One of the visitors on Wednesday was Danish MEP Soren Sondergaard, who is also a member of the Interparliamentary Union, an international association of parliaments founded in 1889 with the aim of securing peace, promoting understanding of democracy in all parts of the world and respecting human rights.

Sondergaard gave a speech in which he expressed his solidarity with the hunger strike and the Kurdish people. The attacks of the Turkish state on the Kurdish people must be stopped, explained the Danish MP, pointing out that the anti-democratic approach of the Erdoğan government is now completely unacceptable.
