Hunger strike in Strasbourg reached day 74

14 people are taking part in the indefinite hunger strike against the isolation launched in Strasbourg on 17 December 2018. Hunger striker and KCDK-E co-chair Yüksel Koç called on Kurds in Europe to support and join actions and the resistance.

On the 74th day of the hunger strike resistance, a large number of Kurds from Germany, France, Switzerland and Belgium visited the activists.

Dayika Sultan of Kurdistan Martyrs and Disappeared Families Association (KOMAW) and woman activist Toprak Sert visited the hunger strikers in Strasbourg.

The 14 hunger strikers have reached day 74 of their fast and were visited also by two activists from Hunermend, Sultan and Necmeddin.

Mother of a martyr, Dayika Sultan, addressed the European institutions, and in particular the Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT): “We will be on the streets and involved in actions until they take a step. We will be on the streets until we receive news from Öcalan.”

Reminding the thousands of prisoners in Kurdistan and Turkey’s jails who would begin a hunger strike tomorrow, Sultan added: “These people are not asking something for themselves. They are fighting for our people and our leader. Leader Apo has been in prison for 20 years and neither his lawyers nor his family are allowed to see him.”

We should stand up now like we did for Kobane

Dayika Sultan reminded that the Kurdish People's Leader was finally allowed to have a very brief visit with his brother, Mehmet Öcalan, but argued: “That does not mean isolation was lifted. We will be protesting and demonstrating until isolation against the Leader is lifted.”

Calling all Kurds living in Europe, Dayika Sultan said: “I tell all our people in Europe: we must stand up day and night. Just like we did when Kobane was attacked. As we have freed Kobane, we must free Leader Ocalan.”

Call to join Cologne march on 2 March

Underlining that the support for the hunger strike resistance should be organised everywhere, especially in front of the CPT, Dayika Sultan also called on people to join the march and rally on Saturday in Cologne. “We should say, Edi Bese, Edi Bese, Edi Bese [Enough]”, she added.

Toprak Siirt, a woman activist from Brussels, called on Kurdish people to not accept the normalization of death. “We are not in this world to die, but to live. People in the four parts of Kurdistan should stand up and fight against isolation.”
