According to the Labor Force Statistics of the Turkish Statistic Institute in June 2018, the rate of unemployment is 12.7 percent among people with higher education, while 28 percent of all unemployed people are university graduates.
The HDP (Peoples’ Democratic Party) Education Commission presented its Higher Education Report at a press conference in the Parliament.
Commissioner and Antep deputy Mahmut Togrul said that as a result of the 12 September 1980 regime, the Institution of Higher Education (YOK) was a nightmare for Turkey.
Students in prison
Toğrul stated that the dependence of the universities was increased especially after the 15 July coup attempt. “Up to now, - he said - more than 7,000 people have been sacked. Currently 70,000 students are in prisons”.
HDP Education Policies and Culture-Art co-deputy chair, Sevtap Akdag Karahanlı presented the report.
Karahanlı said: “The people of the government shifted the power relations of the universities in their favour. They put pressure on critic and dissident academics, as well as students”.
