HDP Hakkari MP Leyla Güven reached day 161 of hunger strike

The hunger strike resistance led by HDP Hakkari MP Leyla Güven spread then to Europe and prisons.

Democratic Society Congress (DTK)  co-chair and Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) Hakkari MP Leyla Güven has reached day 161 of her hunger strike demanding the end of isolation against Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan.

Leyla Güven had launched the hunger strike resistance against isolation when she was in Diyarbakır E-Type Prison and after her release has continued the action at her house in Amed. 

HDP member Nasır Yağız has joined the HDP Hakkari MP a few days later, and is now on his 148th day of fast in Hewlêr.

The hunger strike resistance spread then to Europe and 14 Kurdish activists in Strasbourg and one activist, Imam Şiş, in Wales, are now on their 122nd day of hunger strike. Political prisoners had gone on hunger strike on 16 December and left therefore 123 days of fast behind. Since 1 March all prisons have joined the hunger strike resistance. 

On 3 March three HDP MPs, Dersim Dağ, Tayip Temel and Murat Sarısaç have gone on hunger strike in the party’s Diyarbakır Provincial Organization.

Sedat Akın, who went on hunger strike in Erzincan T Type Closed Prison, was released and is now on his 98th day of fast at his house in Batman. 

Gurbet Ektiren, has been released from Bakırköy prison where she had gone on hunger strike on 15 January. İhsan Sinmiş (55) has gone on hunger strike on 1 March in Silivri Prison. He was released on 11 March and is continuing his fast at his house in Küçükçekmece in Istanbul. 

Ferdi Karabay was released on 22 March after going on hunger strike in Buca Kırıklar No.1 F-Type Closed Prison on 1 March. 

Activists who put an end to their life to protest isolation 

Uğur Şakar set his body on fire in front of Krefeld court in Germany on 20 February and lost his life in the hospital on 22 March. 

Zülküf Gezen ended his life to protest isolation on 17 March in Tekirdağ F Type Prison No. 2, Ayten Beçet on 23 March in Gebze Women's Closed Prison, Zehra Sağlam on 24 March in Oltu T Type Closed Prison, Medya Çınar on 25 March in the Mardin E Type Closed Prison, Yonca Akici on 9 March in Şakran Women's Closed Prison, Siraç Yüksek on 2 April in Osmaniye T Type Closed Prison No. 2 and Mahsum Pamay on 5 April in Elazığ ended his life at No. 1 High Security Prison.
