HDP MP Başaran condemns latest wave of arrests

Başaran said that the AKP-MHP alliance should give up trying to hide its own failure by attacking the HDP.

HDP deputy Ayşe Acar Başaran said in a written statement that the party condemns the ongoing detentions in the strongest terms.

Başaran was referring to the wave of house raids and detentions carried out against HDP members. The latest being on Thursday in İzmir, Mardin and Şırnak.

Başaran reminded that 21 people including municipal assembly members, HDP district co-chairs and youth assembly members have been taken into custody and said: "All of our friends involved in democratic politics should be released immediately. This wave of arrests are contrary to political ethics and needs to be ended. These political operations launched every other day have no legal grounds and are a violation of human rights and liberties."

Başaran added: "It is clear that these attacks aim at exasperating the climate of fear in the country. For years and years, it has been proven that such an unlawful and illegal method of 'trying to intimidate with detentions and arrests' does not work."

Başaran then reminded that "since 2015, at least 12 thousand people including HDP deputies, co-mayors, party executives, members and supporters have been taken into custody. Over 6 thousand people are currently behind bars.

"If arresting people had been a useful method to get rid of the HDP - she added - then the people would not have stood behind the HDP that strongly in the last four elections."

Başaran said that in fact the "AKP-MHP alliance should give up trying to hide its own failure by attacking the HDP."
