German Green Party in solidarity with Leyla Güven

A delegation of HDP Germany held a warm meeting with Green officials who expressed their solidarity with hunger strikes against the isolation of Abdullah Öcalan.

In order to draw attention to the hunger strike by HDP Hakkari MP Leyla Güven and prisoners in Turkey and Kurdistan, a delegation of HDP Germany branch, including former deputies, held some meetings with the parties of the Federal Assembly.

HDP former deputies Ziya Pir, Faysal Sarıyıldız, Sibel Yiğitalp and HDP Germany branch Representatives Sinan Önal and Muhammet Kaya were part of the delegation that visited the Green Party headquarters.

The HDP delegation met with a group of the party’s executive board members, including Green Party Vice President Jamila Schäfer and Green Party Youth of organisation executive, Max Lucks.

After the warm meeting Schäfer and Lucks posted a video in solidarity with HDP Hakkari MP Leyla Güven.

The Green Party officials said: “The only way to overcome this deadlock in Turkey once again passes through peace talks.”

The Green Party executives further stated that they found Leyla Güven's action meaningful and supportive.

The Green Party also issued a press release stating that they would continue to support Leyla Güven and pledged to send a delegation to Turkey in a near future.

The HDP delegation reminded the Green party officials that Leyla Güven is an elected representative, but she remains in prison.

Three demands from the HDP

Former HDP deputy Sibel Yiğitalp, who made a statement about the meeting with the Green Party officials, said: “After we explained the urgency in taking action for Leyla Güven, the Green party officials said that they would make attempts to draw attention to the situation.”

Former deputy Ziya Pir said: “We are not going to the German political parties as a necessity. Turkey has signed international agreements and needs to be reminded that it has to honor and respect them. We've invited them to pick up this role. We have reminded both the UN and the European Conventions on Human Rights.”

Reminding that they had voiced three demands at the meeting with the Greens, Pir added: “The first demand was about Leyla Guven's situation, the second, connected to the first, was about the removal of isolation of Mr Öcalan, the third was about the threat of assault on Rojava and the ongoing invasion of Afrin. The Green party officials said that they would make statements and talk to other organisations to join in the statements on all these issues.”
