EMEP: The government is responsible for increase in suicide

EMEP stressed that the capitalist system and the policies of the AKP government were responsible for the suicides of the last days linked to the economic crisis.

Labor Party (EMEP) Istanbul Provincial Organization organised a protest in Istanbul to draw attention to the latest suicides linked to the economic crisis experienced by the country. 

The statement was read by Sema Barbaros, President of EMEP Istanbul Provincial Organization.

Unemployment has continued to increase in the last 15 years

Barbaros said: "We have to pay attention to the increase in suicides due to the economic crisis" and stressed that poverty has increased.

Barbaros said that workers and laborers are experiencing a worsening of their living conditions and that those who were exposed and criticized the reality of things were accused of "terrorism".

Barbaros added: "Unemployment has reached its peak in the last 15 years. The number of unemployed has increased by 980,000 in one year to 4,650.000."

'Suicides during the AKP government have been 47,537.000'

Barbaros pointed out that suicides have reached 47,537.000 during the AKP's rule and pointed out that 8 people a day have committed suicide in the past 16 years.

In 2018, according to official statistics, 3,161 people ended their lives.

The EMEP executive said that it is important to organise in order to get rid of "those who tie our lives to a thread of cotton."
