Demirtaş denied newspaper with his mother's photo and comments

Posts on HDP’s imprisoned presidential candidate Selahattin Demirtaş’s social media accounts point out the media embargo against the HDP.

Peoples’ Democratic Party’s (Halkların Demokratik Partisi - HDP) imprisoned presidential candidate Selahattin Demirtaş sent messages through his social media accounts. Demirtaş pointed out the media embargo against the HDP and himself, and mentioned the restrictions in prison on the same issue.

“It is still prohibited to make news about HDP/Demirtaş on TV,” said Demirtaş and continued: “Very few newspapers write news about us. While in the prison, papers like BirGün, Cumhuriyet and Evrensel are confiscated for inspection because they have news about me, and are given back the next day. I wonder if the Minister of Justice is aware of this practice.”

Demirtaş said even articles about his mother are censored: “Today, some pages of the Cumhuriyet newspaper weren’t given to me because they have a photograph of me and my mother together and some comments by her. I guess they are afraid her words will affect me and I will vote for myself. I wonder what she said. I would say, do not fear the messages mothers send.”
