Deal reached in Daraa: Armed groups surrender

Following the unprecedented bombing by Russian and Syrian forces in Daraa, armed groups have sat down in negotiations with Russia once again. The armed groups are reported to have surrendered.

According to the reported agreement between Russia and armed groups, the groups who prefer to stay in the region will lay down their weapons and Russian police will settle in the Daraa region.

The announcement was made by Ibrahim Jabavi, the spokesperson of a group that call themselves he Free Syrian Army. According to Jabavi, the agreement also includes a bilateral ceasefire and the regime forces withdrawing from several cities to the south of Daraa.

In a Reuters article based on sources close to the armed groups, the agreement will go into effect today. The agreement gives control of the point of passage to Jordan to Assad’s forces.

Those who don’t accept the authority of the Syrian regime in Daraa are to leave the region and go to the northern part of the country. There was a similar deal made in Eastern Ghouta, the gangs there were sent to the areas under Turkey’s invasion. Armed groups and gangs in Daraa were also supported by Turkey.

There have been five rounds of meetings between Russia and the armed groups in Daraa since Saturday. When the last meeting on Wednesday failed, on Thursday the region was bombed intensely. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, in the span of one day jets and mortars rained bombs thousands of times.
