Amed lawyers demand justice for Tahir Elçi

Amed (Diyarbakır) Bar’s president was murdered in 2015 yet no suspect has been brought to justice.

Amed Bar carried out its protest for the 132th week asking for justice for the Bar’s president, lawyer Tahir Elçi, murdered on 28 November 2015.

Elçi was killed in front of the Four-Legged Minaret in Sur, yet to date no suspect has been taken to the prosecution office.

Lawyers and relatives of Tahir Elçi have been meeting in front of Diyarbakır Court for 132 weeks to ask for justice and a fair investigation.

Several lawyers joined this week’s action together with relatives of Human Rights Association (IHD) Amed Branch executive Muhterem Süren, who passed away last month.

The lawyers opened a banner saying “We will not forget you" written in Kurdish and Turkish and carried photographs of Tahir Elçi.

Speaking at the action, Amed Bar Secretary General Av. Mahsum Batı said: “As we have said many times before, Tahir Elçi was murdered, yet no suspect have been included in the investigation file”.

Bati added: “We stated and we repeat again that to us, everyone carrying a gun at the time of the event, needs to be treated as a suspect. Yet, to date, nobody has been called in to give a statement to the prosecution office.”

The Bar Secretary General confirmed that “this action will continue until the perpetrators of Tahir Elçi murder and those who ordered it are brought to justice”.

Referring to the Lice Massacre Case which is expected to open at İzmir 1st Heavy Penal Court on Friday, Batı said: “Tahir Elçi was also a lawyer in the Lice case. He defended the victims and the injured there. From here we say that we will carry out what Tahir Elçi had started”.

Tahir Elçi was shot once in the head while giving a press statement beside the "Four-legged Minaret" of the Sheikh Matar Mosque. The HDP called the shooting a "planned assassination".
