AKP couldn’t stomach Newroz joy: Hundreds detained

Hundreds of people have been taken into custody following Newroz celebrations in Izmir, Istanbul, Adana and Amed.

The AKP-MHP regime is unhappy that the Kurdish people and their allies are celebrating Newroz in a glorious and enthusiastic way. Following massive celebrations with the spirit of resistance despite all the oppression and bans, hundreds of people have been detained in various cities.

IZMIR

Many people have been detained following the Newroz celebrations held in Izmir’s Gündoğdu Square. At the start of celebrations, the detention count was at 40 people, and police continued to record people during the celebrations. Over 100 more people were detained later on, including minors, women with children aged 0 to 6 and elderly people.

The total detention count is at 150 people, out of whom the following were able to be identified:

"HDP Provincial Branch administrators Gül Turgal, Elisa İlin, Hatice Tunç, Ahmet Adıyaman, Veysel İnan, Gevre Aktaş, Emrah Demir, Dilan Yurteri, Raciye Altındağ, Murat Avcı, Seyit Turğay, Ramazan Acar, Nazdar Kaymaz and Remziye Kaçar (detained along with her baby), Filiz Adıyaman, Iranian citizen Nevit Ramo, Mizgin Kartal, Emine Kartal, Semira Akar, İlknur Karadeniz, Hediye Ertaş, Tayip Bor, Nazan Korkmaz, Göze Aktaş (from Peace Mothers), Hacire Konak, Mazlum Doğan, Ramazan Dal, Azize Gökalp, Fatma Avcı, Gurbet Işık, Gülnaz Ektiren."

Nuran Uğurlu, Baran Kağan Dağ and Dilan Anat who was detained for her army green clothes are held in the Izmir Police Minors Department as they are under the age of 18.

ISTANBUL

Police battered and detained several people following the celebrations in Istanbul’s Bakırköy Freedom Square. The 80 people who have been detained are held in the Police Headquarters on Vatan Street.

ADANA

The police attacked the crowd following the celebrations in Adana’s Mimar Sinan Open Air Theater. 10 people were detained during the attack. The detainees are being held in Adana Police Anti-Terror Unit.

AMED

Some 70 people, including 30 minors, have been detained in Amed following the Newroz celebrations. Families of the detainees gathered in front of the Diyarbakır Security Directorate last night and HDP Diyarbakır MP Feleknas Uca met with the police for information on the detainees. Uca said the children are being held in the Minors Department and that they were able to identify 22 of the detainees.

There could possibly be more people in police custody.
