15 August: 34 years of victorious resistance

This year on 15 August the 34th anniversary of the 1984 PKK guerrilla actions are celebrated.

This 15 August marks the 34th anniversary of the PKK (Kurdistan Workers' Party) actions in Eruh (Siirt) and Semdinli (Hakkari) in 1984.

Led by PKK commander Agit (Mahsum Korkmaz), these attacks marked a new phase on the resistance struggle of Kurds against Turkish fascism.

The PKK's second party Congress, which was held from 20 to 25 August 1982 in Daraa, Syria, had decided that the PKK would start preparing for an insurgency inside Turkey.

On the evening of 15 August 1984, PKK guerrillas carried out actions in the towns of Eruh and Şemdinli thus launching a new resistance phase against the fascist-military coup [which had taken place on 12 September 1980] and the colonial-genocide system it represents.

The most important feature of the 15 August guerrilla initiative was the new spirit of resistance it carried with it.

In fact, 34 years on, that spirit is still there.

Today, the AKP-MHP fascist dictatorship, requires a new resistance, just like it was the case on 15 August 1984.

Just as the 15 August 1984 actions ultimately defeated the fascist-military regime of 12 September, today a new 15 August is needed to defeat the AKP-MHP fascist dictatorship.

The Kurds and all the revolutionary-democratic forces must fight against the Erdogan-Bahçeli fascist dictatorship with the same spirit of resistance and victory, as KCK Executive Council co-chair, Cemil Bayik said.
