Demirtaş on his way to court for hearing in Istanbul

HDP Co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş, jailed since November 4, 2016, will appear before court for the first time today.

Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş, jailed in Edirne F Type Closed Prison since November 4, 2016, is being brought to Istanbul to attend a hearing at Bakırköy 38th Penal Court of First Instance at 14:00 p.m. Friday afternoon.

This is the first time Demirtaş will appear before court since his imprisonment. He is accused of "insulting the President” in a speech he made after his visit to Russia at Atatürk Airport on 24 December 2015.

The hearing will take place in the 16th Heavy Penal Court with the largest hall in Bakırköy Courthouse. While police forces have been deployed around the court, people have started to come to the court for the hearing.
