Bayýk: Last Chance for AKP

In an article titled 'Last Chance for AKP' published in Yeni Özgür Politika and Azadiya Welat daily on Monday, Kurdistan Communities Union (KCK) Executive Council member Cemil Bayýk said that the AKP government had to re-start talks with Kurdish leader Öcalan because of the resistance Öcalan, the Kurdish people and the guerrilla movement have shown against the  policy of threat and blackmail the AKP has implemented in the last one and a half year.

“No matter with what intention the talks have been started, the current situation shows how much difficulty the AKP is having”, said Bayýk who wrote the followings;

“It is the PKK (Kurdistan Workers Party) and the Kurdish people that have demanded negotiations with Kurdish people's leader. In this respect, the demand of both sides seems to have been fulfilled. Given the fact that the Kurdish people and their leader have always worked to achieve a democratic solution to the Kurdish issue, the current talks may have a good outcome should the AKP government act consistently. The attitude of the Turkish state will be crucial as to which type of democratic solution and just peace could be reached. Rest assured that no obstacle will come from the side of Kurds”.

If Öcalan is to be pivotal to dialogue, a proper environment needs to be provided for him to make sure that he can play his role well, underlined Bayýk and said the followings;

“If solution is the aim, then the first step should be treating the interlocutors with respect. In this respect, the approach towards the Kurdish leader is of major importance, as may be understood by everyone who sides with negotiations. Should the state fail to provide such an environment, its attitude towards the talks could be called into question. This is why the PKK has highlighted demands for proper conditions of health and safety for the Kurdish leader”.

Bayýk ended his article by pointing out that the current talks with the Kurdish leader could pave the way for a process of negotiations, adding; “Kurds are always ready for a solution, nobody can deny their will for a solution to be achieved through negotiations. However, if these talks are aimed at the disarmament and displacement of PKK armed forces, they will fail. Negotiations should deal with political issues. The armed parties would be called to the table only after the proposal of a viable project has been made”.
