Regime provocation in Qamishlo fails

Clashes broke out between Baathist Syrian Regime forces and Rojava Public Security and Self-Defense units yesterday when regime officials forcibly enlisted numerous Arab and Kurdish young men into the Syrian army.

Clashes broke out between Baathist Syrian Regime forces and Rojava Public Security and Self-Defense units yesterday around 23:00 when regime officials located in the town’s train station, Ellaya prison, and main crossroads forcibly enlisted numerous Arab and Kurdish young men into the Syrian army. In response, Kurdish Public Security and Self-Defense forces took control of these three areas under Syrian army control and arrested tens of Syrian soldiers, which forced the Syrian Regime to free all previously-enlisted youth this morning.

Rojava Public Security and Self-Defense Commander Ciwan İbrahim spoke to ANHA News Agency and said that, in addition to forced-enlisting, Syrian regime forces also injured a Rojava canton official in Qamishlo. İbrahim stated that they attacked regime forces located in the town’s train station, Ellaya prison, and main crossroads in self-defense, and arrested tens of soldiers. İbrahim said that they liberated these three areas from regime soldiers and freed the arrested soldiers after the regime freed all Arab and Kurdish youth that had previously been forced to enlist in the Syrian army.

Rojava Public Security General Command released a written statement on the confrontation today and confirmed that all young men that had previously been forced to enlist in the Syrian army are now free. Highlighting the timing of this regime provocation, Rojava Public General Command said that the forced-enlisting and the attack on the Rojava canton official came right after YPG-YPJ’s liberation of Gire Spi from ISIS gangs.

General Command stated that Cizîr canton is and will be the center of sisterhood and coexistence in Syria, and attacks such as the recent regime provocation aim to disrupt this harmony. General Command said that after the liberation of forcibly-enlisted youth and of the three areas previously under Syrian regime control, life got back to normal and all arrested Syrian soldiers were freed. General Command ended its statement by calling on the people of Cizîr Canton to be alert and sensitive in the face of such provocations.
