Body of Diyarbakır Bar Head Tahir Elçi, who was shot dead in Amed's Sur district earlier today, is being held in the morgue of Selahaddin Eyyübi Training and Research Hospital.

The Preliminary autopsy report reveals that Elçi was shot by a bullet which entered his body at the back of his neck and got out of his left eyebrow. The report also confirms that he died as a result of gunfire.

Video footage published by some agencies show that policemen standing near a car on Elçi's left side open fire around as he waits near the Four Footed Minaret where he had made a statement to the press condemning the recent attack on the historical structure.

As the footage shows Elçi still alive amid gunfire, police later open fire towards him, after which his dead body is seen lying on the ground near the minaret.

In the meantime, Diyarbakır Governor's Office said in a statement that one police died and two others were wounded at the scene, while an investigation has been launched into the incident.
